“Smash the…” broken glass sculpture

from $50.00

When we start to break down oppressive institutions, beautiful colors and light can shine through the cracks we’ve made.

I print or hand-letter the slogan “Smash the Patriarchy” on a piece of glass, which I cure in the kiln so that the letters will never fade or rub off. (Computer-printed letters are only available in sepia color, as they are made from the iron in some laser printer toner.)

I then hit the glass with a hammer and arrange the broken pieces onto a clear base and add crushed dichroic (sparkly) glass, crushed colored glass, and/or glass-based enamel to the cracks.

Pieces in a wooden frame are ready to hang on a wall or place on a shelf. Pieces without a frame stand on their own base. Pieces with transparent glass look their best when they are lit from both the front and the back. On a shelf near a window or in front of a tea light, the light coming through the cracks can sparkle or glow, while the ambient light in the room keeps the words legible.
